Science Based Targets (SBTs) are the gold-standard of GHG reduction target setting.

SBTs can be seen as the compass guiding companies in the mission to curb GHG emissions and embrace the imperative transition to a net-zero economy. The SBTs reveal not only the magnitude of emissions reductions needed but also the urgency of achieving them to prevent the dire impacts of climate change.

As of March 2023, more than 4,000 companies worldwide are leading the charge toward a net-zero economy. They are accomplishing this by adopting emissions reduction targets firmly rooted in climate science. During the same period, over 2,300 companies received the SBTi's stamp of approval on their science-based targets.

The far-reaching influence of the SBTi is evident in its 2021 Progress Report. It showcased that one-third of the global market capitalization has pledged to undertake climate action guided by the SBTi's principles, with 1.5 billion tonnes of CO2 emissions addressed (scopes 1 and 2). Remarkably, 2021 witnessed a reduction of 53 million tonnes of CO2 emissions across all these ambitious targets.

Building on its achievements, the SBTi unveiled the groundbreaking Net-Zero Standard in October 2021. This standard empowers companies with the essential tools and guidance to establish science-based net-zero targets. As of March 2023, more than 170 companies have successfully validated their net-zero commitments, marking a pivotal step toward a sustainable future.
